Because the Residence theater was reserved only for the the aristocrats, the king decided to erect a theater for the citizens. Karl v. Fischer won an architect competition therefore the theater was built according to his plans. Because the Nationalheater was erected on the former ground of a destroyed Franziskaner-monestry, the indignation of the people was first of all very large. Therfore a devastating fire in 1817 was interpreted as a sign of god. L. v. Klenze led the reconstruction with Fischer's plans.
